Rigging For Trail Work Workshop

Welch Trail Education Center
Harriman State Park
Sunday, 9/22/24
9am-4pm

Join Senior Trail Builder Ben Sugar on this Introductory Rigging For Trail Work Workshop.

Rigging, or tools and systems used to transport materials in construction, is an extremely efficient way for trail workers to move rocks or other extremely heavy objects without motorized equipment, sometimes over long distances or over extremely rugged terrain. Employing these equipment and methods can save work, maximize safety, and minimize construction disturbances.

This workshop will familiarize participants with griphoist winches and associated equipment as well as rope belay devices. It will cover concepts necessary for their safe/effective application, as well as hands-on field practice in how to use them in various configurations such as simple drags and controlled lowering. Proper care and maintenance of equipment will also be covered.

This specific iteration of our "Rigging For Trail Work" Workshop is an introduction to rigging. This will not cover more advanced topics, like highline design and setup.
